SAN

DIEGO,

Calif.

(Neuter)

-

A

disturbance

among

illegal

aliens

being

held

at

a

naval

air

station

in

San

Diego

resulted

in

28

prisoners

being

injured

and

taken

to

on

Friday,

an

official

said.

Navy

Lt.

Cmdr.

Steve

Burnett

said

10

illegal

aliens,

apparently

upset

by

lack

of

canteen

privileges

at

the

Miramar

Naval

Air

Station,

set

fire

to

a

mattress.

The

smoke

from

the

fire

affected

28

prisoners,

who

were

taken

to

Scripps

Memorial

Hospital,

where

they

were

treated

for

inhalation.

Half

of

those

were

kept

in

the

hospital

while

the

other

14

were

released

after

treatment.

They

were

then

transported

to

the

Metropolitan

Detention

Center

in

downtown

San

along

with

the

remainder

of

the

174

federal

prisoners

being

held

at

the

Miramar

jail

facility.

Burnett

said

they

would

remain

in

the

detention

center

until

the

damage

at

had

been

assessed.

Burnett

said

that

not

all

the

civilian

prisoners

held

in

the

Miramar

brig

were

illegal

aliens.

Some

were

federal

prisoners

considered

non-violent

who

were

being

held

because

of

overcrowding

in

other

federal

prisons.

Some

210

naval

detainees

being

held

in

another

part

of

the

brig

were

not

affected

by

Friday's

disturbance,

he

said.

San

Diego

Attorney

Alan

Bersin

said

there

was

``no

massive

damage''

to

the

Miramar

facility

and

that

the

situation

had

quickly

been

brought

under

control.
