Newspoem 9 February 1996
ANGER WITHOUT SELFPITY
(violence
without victims)
You put out fire with water,
But you put out violence with war?
If everyone who read this poem gave a dollar to someone
who needed it more than the economy would collapse and we could get inside it.
You put out violence with war.
You put out war with weapons.
You put out weapons with prisons.
If this poem were printed in Forbes screaming lear jets would bomb the
inner cities with billions of dollars of billowing money. Executives would desert
tall buildings, leave their keys in their Unlocked cars, fold their clothes
and leave them on a park bench and take the subway home naked.
You put out money with the wealthy.
You don't put out the wealthy with taxes.
You put out taxes with weapons and prisons.
You put out people.
