Gore Vidal. Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace: or How We Got to be so Hated. 2002 Damn! You go Gore! Short and fiery and, surprisingly, mostly about Timothy McVeigh, this screed is an easy read and gives one some hope that there exist established writers who are neither conservative nor timid. The main theme here seems to be the erosion of civil liberties, though I would have liked to see more detail in the section where Vidal writes a letter to the new FBI director enumerating all the leads in the Oklahoma City bombing that were never investigated. I don't think the FBI ended up following any of these leads, so I wish Vidal had. |
