Mariano Azuela. The Underdogs. 1915. Translated by E. Mungui'a Jr. 1962.

"The novel of the Mexican revolution" is cynical.

We follow a motley crew of unsophisticated freedom fighters through many winning battles, and question their collective motives. Women are mistreated, houses are looted, and finally the rebels are mown down. There is little in the way of beautiful language, noble sentiment, or revolutionary inspiration here.
